Planting A Eucalyptus

Dug through the soil in this wash, and

through the caliche hardpan to granite.

Hoping to bore through the granite with
an auger rented from Home Depot.

Got down ~15" twice. Could've replaced
the bit, added an extension, and ...

could've kept going, but decided to stop.
Hopefully the tree roots won't rot.

The granite kind of ate the auger bit some.

Came back for two more bags later on.

Gypsum directions

Mulch for the first layer, then mixed with

natural soil half way, then gypsum to
(theoretically) aid water infiltration.

Found a nice Eucalyptus at the local
Joshua Tree Basin Nursery.

Making sure that the base of the tree
is slightly above grade.

Will roughen the root ball with fingers to
release them from their bucket shape.

Alternating layers of soil and mulch.

A watering basin is banked up. The tree is
gently tied to stakes through old hoses.

Its first watering as seen through our
diningroom window.

As seen through my office window, just
to the left of a magnificent view.

To the electronic irrigation system ...

To more of this and other planting one year later ...
