Lined this shallow hole with a scrap of roofing paper & a piece of cardboard. Wet it thoroughly and scooped in some concrete.

This was another that I thought totally unimportant, structurally, so I didn't even bother to put a PVC anchor into it.

This concrete footing is only about 4 or 5” deep though it is permanently bonded to bedrock.

I later regretted not having an anchor; it would have been helpful having something hold the post in position as I aligned the framing and attached it.

Perhaps I could have also skipped the concrete and just stood the post on the exposed bedrock, but the bedrock in this particular spot was fairly loose; I think the post would have eaten away at it, even with a rubber foot (see examples in Posts 14 to 17 ).
