Hi and hope you’re well! I came across your website while searching for a solution to my Rheem tankless water heater puddle/ leak.

Any special tools needed to replace a “water control valve” on the inside of my Rheem tankless Gas WH? It’s just about identical to the model in your pics.

I’ve got a slow leak just like yours and the replacement part from Rheem in hand. Any help would be much appreciated!

Thank you in advance! Frank W.

Hi Frank,

Good question. It has been 8 years but I will do my best. This list would include tools that you can see in a couple of the pictures. Plus a few that I might or might not have used:

1. Blue rubber & knit gloves you can get at Home Depot for $6. They get a good gentle grip on anything. And a new pair will not contaminate anything.

2. Flashlight.

3. Long $8 Flex-Cable Pick-Up Tool 4-Finger Claw End, NOT magnetic.

4. Long narrow needle nose pliers.

5. Long needle nose 90 degree bent nose pliers.

6. Channellock Tongue and Groove Pliers | 12-Inch

7. Variable speed power drill with LED lamp and a long 6" phillips bit.

8. Hand held phillips screwdriver.

9. Bungee cords to hold wires out of the way.

10. Emery paper to clean igniters.

11. Canned air.

I will be copying this emailed question and answer to the relevant Comment page.

Good luck, Van

You, my friend, are a genius and excellent tutor! I have a similar Rheem tankless with a bad water control valve error. However, I could not find any service manuals or guides that explained how to take this thing apart to replace. Your step-by-step pictures are FANTASTIC!! And saved me from paying over $300 to a professional plumber who looked about as clueless as I on how to disassemble/reassemble the bypass & water control valves.

Thank you, Van.

My Rheem HW heater froze and broke the exact same way. And go figure, Rheem would not stand behind their warranty since it's mounted on a mobile home. So, with your insight, and a $70 replacement part; in less than an hour I had the thing working again.

Appreciate the help.

Thank you John. Glad that page has proven itself useful.

I have since added heat tapes to the pipes, including the two that come up into the water heater. That is described at:
http://www.blakeman.net/_VA/CA/JT/2012/Jour/JT12journal1.htm#Pic03
which includes a link to another page that goes into some detail.

However, I have since discovered that those six tapes, activating at the same time in freezing weather, create too much of a pull on the solar batteries. It is no fun waking up to no power on a cold morning.

So I ordered four timers online, set each to activate for a dedicated fifteen minute interval each hour, plugged one or two heat tapes into each, so that at most only two short tapes are on at any given time.

There may be a slight overlap because the timers tend to vary in accuracy, but not enough to shut down my system at night.

Thanks again, Van
